WACO, Texas -- No. 17 Texas Tech (18-8) put up a strong effort, but came up short against No. 10 Texas (19-5) in the first round of the Big 12 Championships at the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, as the Longhorns topped the Red Raiders, 4-3.
"This match could have gone either way," said Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "There was about a one-minute window where the momentum shifted. Down 2-1, Jolan (Cailleau) is up 4-2 in the third set. Felipe (Soares) is tied 3-3 in the third and Francisco (Zambon) was just starting the third. We were right there, but there were some things that prevented us from winning.
"We have got to clean that up. It was a disappointing loss because we were so close but we will bounce back. You have to give a lot of credit to Texas. They are No. 10 in the nation for a reason."
The match was moved indoors after rain overnight soaked the Hurd Tennis Center courts overnight. The two teams started with singles.
No. 4 Soren Hess-Olesen picked up the first point of the day for Texas, as the Longhorn topped Hugo Dojas, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
Texas' Clement Homs made it 2-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over Connor Curry, but the Red Raiders answered when freshman Alex Sendegeya, who is ranked No. 120, upset No. 51 Adrien Berkowicz, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. It was Sendegeya's 20th win of the season.
"All of us fought hard today," said freshman Alex Sendegeya. "Obviously we were playing for home court advantage in the NCAAs, but it is just another opportunity to go someplace else and win on their yard. We have done that a lot of times this year. We are going to relish the opportunity and take it to whoever we play.
"I played a lot individually (as a junior), but now I play for this team and these guys are my family now. I love these guys. I love this team."
UT's No. 41 Lloyd Glasspool added an upset over No. 32 Felipe Soares, and Texas Tech trailed, 3-1, with two matches remaining.
George Goldhoff battled back from a 4-2 deficit in the third to top No. 114 Jolan Cailleau, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, and clinch the match for the Longhorns.
Texas Tech will now wait to find out its postseason destination on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the NCAA Selection Show that will air live on NCAA.com.
