LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- No. 19 Texas Tech held off a late advance by UC-Santa Barbara to oust the Gauchos, 4-2, in the first round of the NCAA Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Friday.
The Red Raiders will face No. 16 UCLA in the second round. The Bruins dumped Florida Gulf Coast, 4-0, on Friday to advance. Texas Tech and UCLA will square off at 5 p.m. CT for the right to advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Waco.
"We played very well in doubles. We had great energy from the start," said 23rd-year head coach Tim Siegel. "Alex (Sendegeya) and Jolan (Cailleau) played very well to get us to 3-0 and then Felipe (Soares) played a great third set to get us the victory.
"I was very impressed with UCSB. They played hard and were very scrappy. It was great to get a win in the NCAAs and now we need to get ready for UCLA."
Connor Curry and Francisco Zambon outlasted UCSB's Morgan Mays and Andrew Riminton, 8-6, at No. 3 and then Jolan Caileau and Alex Sendegeya dropped Tobias Galskov and Teague Hamilton, 8-4, to secure the doubles point for Texas Tech.
No. 123 Cailleau then picked up a straight-set win over Cody Rakela, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 lead. No. 117 Sendegeya followed with a tough 6-3, 7-5 win over Mays, pulling Texas Tech within one of clinching the victory.
UCSB got on the board, when Nathan Edhmade won in three sets over Hugo Dojas, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The Gauchos then pulled within one, 3-2, after Erik Johnsson pulled past Zambon, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4).
But two-time All-Big 12 honoree Felipe Soares won a marathon at No. 1 over Galskov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, to send Texas Tech into the second round.
The Red Raiders improved 19-8 on the season. It marks just the fifth time in the last four years that Texas Tech has won 19 matches in a season, joining 1990 (23-6), 2005 (25-4), 2008 (20-6) and 2010 (22-6).
