Eleven Red Raiders Earn Academic All-Big 12

Floyd is the only Big 12 baseball student-athlete to have a 4.0 grade-point-average.

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- The Texas Tech baseball program matched a school record with 11 Academic All-Big 12 selections while also equaling a Tech record with seven first team selection, the league office announced today.
Seven Red Raiders were named to the first team, including junior Zach Davis (Exercise and Sport Sciences), sophomore Dylan Dusek (Accounting), junior Tyler Floyd (Exercise and Sport Sciences), sophomore Ryan Long (University Studies), senior Corey Taylor (General Studies), junior Johnathon Tripp (Sociology) and junior Matt Withrow (University Studies).
In addition, Floyd is the only baseball student-athlete in the Big 12 Conference with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average.
Four Red Raiders were named to the Academic All-Big 12 second team, including senior Bryant Burleson (Accounting), junior Matt Custred (Marketing), senior Dominic Moreno (Communication Studies) and senior Tim Proudfoot (University Studies).
The first team includes 51 members in the league while 29 selections were named to the second team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percentage of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percentage or participation are also eligible.
Four Red Raiders are receiving the recognition for a second or third time during their careers, including Burleson who has been honored three times, including back-to-back first team selections in 2013-14. Davis and Tripp were second team selections a year ago and Proudfoot was a second team pick as a sophomore in 2013.
Under third-year head coach, the Red Raiders have had 18 Academic All-Big 12 selections, including 10 first-team honors.
The Red Raiders will complete their regular season schedule this weekend, staring this evening with the opener of a three-game Big 12 series at West Virginia with first pitched scheduled for 5 p.m. CT at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown.
