LUBBOCK, Texas - Following a successful junior campaign that saw Felipe Soares lead his team in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament, the Brazilian native is headed back to the NCAA Individual Championships on Wednesday in Waco, Texas.
Soares, who is ranked No. 37 in the country, will make his second straight appearance in the tournament and face off against the 11th-ranked player in the country, Brayden Schnur of the University of North Carolina, in the first round beginning at 9 a.m. CT.
There will be no rest for the weary, though, as Soares and fellow junior Hugo Dojas will compete in the doubles competition on Thursday. The 22nd-ranked duo opens up play against the No. 5 tandem in the country in Gonzales Austin and Rhys Johnson of Vanderbilt.
The roommates are the ninth doubles team to make the field in school history. The last doubles tandem of Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar earned All-America honors and were national doubles finalists.
Soares' selection in the singles bracket makes the 15th different time that Texas Tech has sent a representative in singles. Soares is the fourth Red Raider to make two appearances in the event, joining Bojan Szumanski, Carvalho and Escobar.
The NCAA selects 64 individuals for singles and 32 teams to compete in the doubles in the individual tournament. All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
