LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Felipe Soares advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships after defeating No. 11 Brayden Schnur of North Carolina on Wednesday in Waco, Texas.
The Brazilian native, who is ranked No. 37 in the country, got down early to Schnur 3-2 in the first set of play, before the 11th-ranked player in the nation retired due to an ankle injury.
Soares will now face Wichita State's Tin Ostojic, who upset Dartmouth's Dovydas Sakinis, 7-6(3), 6-3 in the Round of 64.
There will be no rest for the weary, though, as Soares and fellow junior Hugo Dojas will compete in the doubles competition on Thursday as well. The 22nd-ranked duo opens up play against the No. 5 tandem in the country in Gonzales Austin and Rhys Johnson of Vanderbilt.
The NCAA selects 64 individuals for singles and 32 teams to compete in the doubles in the individual tournament. All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
