LUBBOCK, Texas - For just the second time in school history, a doubles team from Texas Tech has advanced to the men's quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.
Juniors Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas defeated Kyle Koch and Thiago Pinheiro of South Carolina in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) on Friday en route to being named All-Americans.
"That may be the most complete doubles match these guys have played all year," head coach Tim Siegel said, following the win. "They returned the ball so well, missed very few volleys and made great decisions all day long."
The duo becomes just the second pair to earn All-America honors under the Texas Tech men's tennis program and Soares now becomes the only player left in the tournament to remain in contention in both the singles and doubles brackets.
The win marks the 16th of the season for the 22nd-ranked team in the country who has yet to play a third set in the national tournament thus far.
The last time a Red Raider tandem advanced to the Elite Eight, Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar finished as runner-ups in the National Championship match in 2012.
The Red Raiders are set to face top-ranked Georgia duo of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Waco, Texas. Smith/Wagland moved into the Elite Eight after defeating Wichita State's Tomislav Gregurovic and Tin Ostojic (6-2, 6-3).
