SAN ANTONIO -- Kimmy Hill shot a 3-under 69 to lead three Lady Raiders under par on Friday as Texas Tech jumped four spots in the second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Regional at Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Tech (292-283--575) shot 5-under as a team to move up four spots to seventh place at 1-under par for the tournament. The Lady Raiders are just four shots back of sixth-place Texas headed into the final day. Tennessee leads all teams at 19-under par followed by Baylor (-15), Washington (-14), UCLA (-12) and Texas A&M (-12).
The top six teams from each of the four regionals advance to the NCAA Championship, May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.
Tech, teeing off on No. 10 once again, started the day five strokes back of the top six at 4-over par before Hill began the charge with a birdie on No. 11. Sarah Brown would follow with one of her own on the same hole and again on 14. The Lady Raiders sunk seven birdies on their first nine to make the turn at 3-under par for the day.
Hill would string together 10 straight pars following her birdie on the 17th to complete a bogey-less round and team-leading 69. It was her first score in the sixties since carding a 68 in the second round of the Web.com Intercollegiate on March 30.
Freshmen Lauren Mason and Gabby Barker would lead a charge on the second nine, collecting birdies on holes five, six and seven to end with a 2-under 70 and 1-under 71, respectively.
Mason also played a flawless round without a bogey and leads all players this week in par scoring with 31.
That set the stage for Brown, as she drained a 18-footer for birdie on the ninth and final hole to complete a 1-over 73 and push Tech into seventh place alone, just behind Texas headed into the final round on Saturday. Senior Stephanie Bertelsen rounded out the scores with a 3-over 75.
Tech will tee off the final round on No. 1, Saturday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT, and play alongside Arizona State (+2) and Oregon (+3).
