NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Texas Tech volleyball suffered its first loss of the season against Stephen F. Austin, 3-0, in game two of the SFA Invitational on Friday night in Nacogdoches.
The Lumberjacks took the sets by scores of: 25-18, 25-22 and 25-19.
"SFA was very complete in their game plan and in their energy," head coach Don Flora said. "Give them credit, late in the second set when we put some pressure on them, they responded well."
Sophomore Victoria Hinneburg recorded a team-high 10 kills, with junior Lauren Douglass following closely behind with eight kills.
SFA claimed set one after registering 16 kills and an attack percentage of .243. Douglass and Hinneburg each had three kills, with the team totaling 10 through the first game.
In set two, the Red Raiders battled from down 18-10, peppering in kills by Hinneburg, Douglass and senior Jenna Allen, to tie it at 20. However, out of a timeout, SFA added three straight points to help close out a 25-22 victory. Tech put together 12 kills in the second set, behind an attack percentage of .267.
The two sides traded leads until midway through the third set, when the Lumberjacks responded with four points in a row to give them enough padding to hold on to the lead and win the match.
Senior Carlie Foust led the Red Raiders with nine digs, while freshman Reyn Akiu notched a season-high of seven. Junior Marguerite Grubb tallied 27 assists to go along with her five digs.
The Red Raiders look to rebound on Saturday as they return for a doubleheader against Northeastern (noon) and South Dakota State (6:30 p.m.).
