LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech men's tennis program unveiled its challenging 2015-16 schedule on Tuesday as released by first-year head coach Brett Masi.
Texas Tech turned in a 19-9 record and secured a NCAA Tournament appearance for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons in 2015. The Red Raiders garnered a No. 19 final national ranking after playing in the nation's most competitive conference which saw a trio of Big 12 teams advance to the NCAA Final Four.
Texas Tech will square off with at least 12 fellow NCAA Tournament opponents which includes four matchups at the McLeod Tennis Center. The Red Raiders ranked second nationally in average attendance per match and sixth in the nation in total attendance last season.
"I'm looking forward to seeing our team compete against the nation's elite," Masi said. "We are definitely going to be challenged, but I can already tell this team is going to be ready. Our dual match schedule is going to be really tough especially with three great tournaments as well as some great non-conference road matches. Obviously, I will get my first taste of the Big 12 juggernauts, but I feel our team will be excited to prove themselves."
The Red Raiders open the fall season with the Midland Invitational (Sept. 18-20), while Felipe Soares will represent Tech at the Oracle/ITA Masters (Sept. 18-20). The highlight of the fall slate is the ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 5-11) hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Texas Tech begins its spring schedule with a trio of neutral site matches in Austin over a four-day span against Arizona (Jan. 15), New Mexico (Jan. 16) and Pacific (Jan. 18). The Red Raiders return to Austin for the 2016 ITA Kickoff Weekend (Jan. 23-24) where Tech meets Ole Miss (Jan. 23) followed by a matchup with either host Texas or Florida (Jan. 24).
Texas Tech welcomes Clemson (Jan. 29) to the McLeod Tennis Center for its home opener. The Red Raiders also have home non-conference meetings versus Abilene Christian (Feb. 6), Texas-San Antonio (Feb. 20), Utah State (Feb. 20), Indiana (March 14) and Tulsa (April 8).
The Red Raiders travel to North Carolina State (Feb. 26) and Wake Forest (Feb. 28) in addition to the San Diego (March 17-19) and Rice (March 25-26) Invitationals in non-conference action.
Texas Tech's five-match Big 12 schedule features home dates with Texas (April 22) and NCAA Final Four participant TCU (April 24), in addition to road trips to NCAA Final Four participant Baylor (April 2), Oklahoma State (April 15) and NCAA national runner-up Oklahoma (April 17). All six Big 12 squads finished the 2015 season among the nation's Top 30 last season. The Big 12 Championships will be hosted by Oklahoma State from April 29-May 1.
