Texas Tech Drops 2-0 Decision At Texas
October 21, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Senior keeper Lauren Watson records league-high nine saves on Friday night in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team fell in a tight battle with Texas, 2-0, on Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
Â
"First of all, credit to Texas for putting two good chances away and playing some tough defense throughout the game," head coach Tom Stone said. "For us, we had more than enough chances to have won the game but each time we rushed it or simply missed the target all together from quality finishing spots around the goal."
Â
The Longhorns (8-7-1, 1-4-1) put up two scores, one in each half, both by forward Jasmine Hart in the 24th & 56th minutes of the contest.
Â
For the second-straight match, senior goalkeeper Lauren Watson set the conference-high in saves for a single-Big 12 match, recording nine on Friday against the Longhorns. She now has 72 this season and 240 in her career in the scarlet & black.
Â
"Lauren [Watson] has been the best performer on the team for the last three weeks," Stone said about his senior goalkeeper. "She is playing with great confidence and is keeping us in it even when we are playing with three or even two at the back. She is playing how a senior should play and we are thankful she is in such good form."
Â
The Longhorns struck first after a quick barrage of attacks resulted in a corner opportunity. After the initial kick, forward Katie Glenn found defender Emma Jett, who sent a shot toward the Red Raider goal, as forward Jasmine Hart redirected the ball with a header over Watson for the score in the 24th minute.
Â
The Red Raiders put up four of their six first-half shots after the tally, with offensive attempts coming from Jade King, Jordan Duke, Mary Heiberger and Tatum Barton. Texas totaled 13 shots in the first frame, as Watson corralled five saves.
Â
The second frame began with seven-straight shots from the Longhorns, coming over an 11-minute stretch. The set was capped off by a Texas goal after a cross by Jett was stopped in the center of the box by Hart, who danced around and found the back of the net for her second goal of the night.
Â
Just like the first half, the Red Raiders immediately found a few offensive chances after the score. Tech had multiple opportunities from deep inside the Texas zone that were blocked or were met with saves from Texas' keeper Paige Brown. However, even with 12 shots in the final frame, including four on goal, the Red Raiders were unable to find the back of the net.
Â
Friday night marked the fourth-straight match Tech's opponent had struck first. The Red Raiders have been held scoreless in each of their last four contests.
Â
"Sure it's frustrating and this can happen in our sport, but these are the same players who were scoring and creating plenty of chances up until two weeks ago," Stone said. "So, we have to keep working in training and see if we can't kick the door in and getting rolling to goal again."
Â
The Red Raiders return to action on Sunday when they take on TCU at 3 p.m. on FOX Sports Southwest at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium in Fort Worth.
Â
"It's another chance to get points down the stretch and these points are quite valuable to whomever gets them," Stone said.
