Men’s Tennis Starts Strong, Bows Out in Singles During Round of 16 at SoCal Intercollegiates
October 29, 2016 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders have two doubles team in action on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team opened the day with four singles victories but were unable to advance past the Round of 16 at the SoCal Intercollegiates Friday at Marks Stadium on the University of Southern Cal campus.
Connor Curry, Carlos DiLaura Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson each picked up straight-set opening round victories. The quartet dropped only a combined 21 games. Sendegeya captured an impressive 6-2, 6-2 triumph over UCLA's Daniel Gealer, while Carlos DiLaura garnered a 6-3, 6-3 win against Nicholas Moreno de Alboran of UC Santa Barbara.
The Red Raiders were unable to secure a spot in the quarterfinal round as three players lost to host USC during Round of 16 action. Sendegeya was upended by Henry Ji in a tightly-contested 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (3) decision.
"USC had our number today," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "We lost all of our second round matches, but we had chances to win in three of those matches. The bottom line is we just need to keep growing, and we need to keep getting better"
In doubles qualifying action, Connor Curry teamed with DiLaura for an 8-2 win over USC's Henry Ji and Jens Sweaney. The pair joins the event's top seed, Sendegeya and Thomson, in doubles Round of 16 matchups on Saturday.
