Tech Returns Home to Face Baylor Wednesday

Red Raiders have taken two of their last three matches to five sets.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Volleyball starts a two-match home stand Wednesday, Nov. 2, as it hosts Baylor at 6 p.m. CT at United Supermarkets Arena. The match, which is designated as a 'Black Out,' will be broadcast on FOX Sports Southwest Plus with Robert Giovannetti and Mike Moffit on the call.

Free 'Blackout Baylor' t-shirts will be available to the first 500 fans in attendance, and a post-match autograph session will take place on the court following the contest.

The Red Raiders (10-15, 0-10) are in the midst of a 13-match skid, but have taken two of their last three matches to five sets, including Saturday's 3-2 loss at West Virginia in which Tech had three match points.

Baylor (18-7, 6-3) defeated the Red Raiders earlier this season 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) in Waco. Junior Katie Staiger led the Bears with 19 kills and 10 digs, and the Bears held Tech to just .130 hitting. Senior Lauren Douglass led the Red Raiders with seven kills.

THE BEARS
Baylor had a three-match win streak snapped Saturday, falling 3-1 at Kansas State. The Bears are currently third in the Big 12 standings with a 6-3 mark with its only other losses in conference play coming to No. 6 Kansas and No. 2 Texas. While Baylor is 10-2 at home this season, it is just 6-4 on the road and has won just seven of 16 sets on the road in league play. Junior Katie Staiger has won a Baylor-record four Big 12 Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week awards this season as she leads the conference with 5.48 kills per set. The Bears boast one of the Big 12's best defenses averaging a league-best 2.56 blocks per set and allowing an opponent hitting percentage of .164, second only to Kansas in the conference.

Texas Tech holds a decisive 50-30 advantage in the overall series, but has won just two of the last 11 meetings, including an 0-3 loss at the hands of Baylor earlier this season in Waco. The Bears have won four straight in the series, with the Red Raiders' last win coming in a five-set battle in Waco in 2014. Texas Tech is 25-12 against Baylor at home, but is winless in the last four meetings at United Supermarkets Arena with the last victory coming in five-sets in 2011.

The Red Raiders nearly captured their first win in Big 12 play at West Virginia, holding a 2-1 lead with three match-point opportunities between the fourth and fifth sets before ultimately falling, 3-2. A balanced effort helped Tech build a lead as four Red Raiders posted double-digit kills for the first time since 2014. Senior Lauren Douglass, sophomore Sarah Redding and freshman Toni McDougald recorded 13 kills each while freshman Chandler Atwood added 12. Senior Marguerite Grubb posted 55 assists and sophomore libero Reyn Akiu tallied 27 digs in the loss.

A year after setting the school mark for hitting percentage in a single season (.376), Douglass is just off last year's pace at .359, and will likely finish near the top of the school's career hitting percentage list. With 27 digs at West Virginia, sophomore Reyn Akiu breached the top 10 of the school's single-season digs list with 421 digs this season. Senior Marguerite Grubb also made a move up the record books with 55 assists at West Virginia to give her 2,467 assists for her career, good for eighth on Tech's all-time career assists list.
