LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech football program placed 14 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 teams that were announced Thursday afternoon by the conference office.

Senior offensive lineman Tony Morales led the way for the Red Raiders as he was one of five student-athletes nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average (compiled in graduate school). This is the first academic honor of Morales' career.

Morales was joined on the first team by sophomore punter Michael Barden, junior wide receiver Cameron Batson, junior wide receiver Dylan Cantrell, junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, sophomore offensive lineman Justin Murphy, senior defensive back Justis Nelson, junior defensive lineman Talor Nunez and senior linebacker Luke Stice.

Tech's second team honorees included sophomore offensive lineman Cole Collier, senior wide receiver Reginald Davis III, sophomore defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko, sophomore wide receiver Kash Knutson and junior deep snapper Kyle Heffron.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two prvious semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19.

The Red Raiders return to the road Saturday afternoon to face Iowa State in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff from Jack Trice Stadium in Ames. The game will air live nationally on FOX Sports 1 and the Texas Tech Sports Network. Â
