Red Raiders Fall in Five Sets to TCU
November 19, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Senior Lauren Douglass recorded a match-high 18 kills on senior night.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Senior Lauren Douglass tallied a match-high 18 kills and fellow senior Marguerite Grubb notched her 19th career double-double, but it wasn't enough as TCU was able to escape with a 3-2 victory on senior night over Texas Tech Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
Â
The Red Raiders (10-20, 0-15) took the first and fourth set and led 10-8 in the fifth, but miscues down the stretch allowed the Horned Frogs (13-12, 6-9) to steal a tight 26-28, 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 15-10 victory. Tech tallied more kills than its opponent for the first time in Big 12 play this season, 68 to 64, but TCU hit 12 services aces to Tech's three.
Â
"Overall, it was probably our best-played match of the season," head coach Tony Graystone said. "TCU is a tournament team with a lot of seniors, and I thought we played great today. Until the last half of the fifth set, we were out-killing them, we were out-digging them, we were out-blocking them, and they got on a run there at the end and took it away. We didn't execute at the end."
Â
Douglass, one of three Red Raiders playing in their final home game, paced the attack with her 19th double-digit kill performance of the season while adding a pair of aces. She scored four consecutive points for the Red Raiders in the middle part of the fifth to power Tech to a 10-8 lead. Meanwhile, Grubb posted a double-double with 55 assists and 14 digs in the loss.
Â
"I had a fun time watching Grubb today," Graystone said. "This was, to me, her best-played match of the season. I was proud of her. Lauren was typical Lauren. I asked her to give me 18 kills, and she gave me 18. She did exactly what we asked."
Â
In all, four Red Raiders were in double figures in kills with sophomore Sarah Redding (14), junior Audrey Fragniere (13) and freshman Toni McDougald (12) providing reinforcements for Douglass.
Â
Defensively, five Red Raiders registered double figures in digs for the first time since Aug. 29, 2015 against Houston. Sophomore Reyn Akiu led the way with 27 and moved into second place on the school's single-season digs list with 535 on the year. Grubb, Fragniere, and freshmen Maggie Sagers and Kylie Rittimann were also in double figures. At the net, sophomore Katy Keenan posted a match-high four blocks.
