Hyrkkonen will suit up for the Red Raiders as a freshman this spring.
LUBBOCK, TEXAS – Texas Tech men's tennis coach Brett Masi announced the signing of Pyry Hyrkkonen to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) and Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) Tuesday as part of the fall signing period.
Hyrkkonen, a native of Finland, will join the Red Raiders for his freshman season this spring. He chose Texas Tech over Oklahoma, SMU and Boise State.
"We are getting an all-around solid player with Pyry," Masi said. "Being accomplished in both singles and doubles, he will be a great help to our lineup. Jordan and I are really excited about his potential. He's an awesome kid too – one that will fit right in with this group we have now. We're really excited about what we can do this spring."
Hyrkkonen has a career-high ITF ranking of 583 and possesses many championship medals from juniors competition. He was the 2015 men's national indoor and outdoor doubles champion in Finland. Hyrkkonen also captured the 2014 U18 indoor singles title in addition to the 2014 U18 national indoor and outdoor doubles crown.
"When the coaching staff contacted me, it was like a dream come true," Hyrkkonen said. "Texas Tech is one of the best programs in the country right now, and I didn't have to think twice about my decision. At Tech, I have a great opportunity to improve as a tennis player and get my degree."
