Patrick Mahomes II was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Monday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II earned his third Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honor this season Monday morning after the junior threw for 586 yards and six touchdowns in a victory over Baylor.
Â
This is the sixth career Big 12 weekly honor for Mahomes, who previously garnered the accolade earlier this season following similar 500-plus passing performances against both Arizona State and Oklahoma. It was also the second time in his three seasons where Mahomes has been recognized after facing Baylor as he also received the honor following the 2014 meeting between the two schools.
Â
Mahomes put together one of his best outings of the season against the Bears as he finished 30-of-46 for 586 yards while also matching his career high with six touchdowns passes. It was the fourth game this season where Mahomes has thrown for over 500 yards, which easily leads the FBS.
Â
The Whitehouse, Texas native consistently torched the Baylor secondary deep as five of his six touchdowns were in excess of 35 yards while three went 60 yards or longer and two were at least 80 yards. All five of those touchdowns came in the first half where Mahomes threw for 412 yards alone.
Â
The deep threat helped the Red Raiders capitalize on three different drives where Tech needed just one play to find the endzone. Mahomes found Dylan Cantrell on a 40-yard strike late in the first quarter before completing an 81-yard bomb to Quan Shorts early in the second quarter and an 80-yarder to Keke Coutee just over two minutes later.
Â
The performance pushed Mahomes over 5,000 yards of total offense on the season, making him just the third FBS quarterback all-time to reach the mark twice in a career. Mahomes joined former Red Raider quarterback Graham Harrell (2007-08) and Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011) in the elusive group.
Â
Mahomes easily leads the nation with 5,052 passing yards this year, making him the fourth Red Raider all-time and the 12th FBS quarterback to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season. Mahomes, who joined fellow Tech quarterbacks B.J. Symons (2003), Graham Harrell (2007-08) and his head coach Kliff Kingsbury (2002), also leads the country in total offense (5,357) and total touchdowns (53) following Friday's performance.
Â
Mahomes' six Big 12 weekly honors rank second among Red Raiders all-time, trailing only Harrell (2006-08) and Kingsbury (1999-02) who both received the accolade seven times over their respective careers.
