November 03, 2016 | Football
Each Thursday during the season, texastech.com will recap a great moment from Texas Tech football history. This week, it's the 1998 Texas game.
LUBBOCK, Texas -- On November 14, 1998, Tech faced No. 18 Texas for the first time during the Mack Brown era, in front of a frenzied Jones Stadium.
Texas Tech's Ricky Williams and Texas' Ricky Williams each rushed for more than 140 yards, and both offensive attacks were clicking. However, the Red Raiders were able to control the clock and ran 97 plays to Texas' 59. Â
Late in the fourth quarter, with a little more than a minute to go and the score tied at 35, Tech quarterback Rob Peters engineered an unforgettable drive, which included him lowering his shoulder into a Longhorn defensive back in Texas territory, losing his helmet in the process.
Tech converted two crucial third downs on the drive, including Peters finding an open Kyle Allamon over the middle for a 36-yard gain down to the Texas 2, with just 37 seconds to go. From there, Peters scored on a quarterback keeper with 29 seconds remaining, sealing back-to-back wins over the Longhorns for the Red Raiders with a 42-35 triumph.
Tech will be looking for its first back-to-back wins over Texas since that 1998 game this Saturday, at 11 a.m., inside Jones AT&T Stadium.
