Patrick Mahomes II becomes the second Red Raider quarterback to earn Academic All-America honors
LUBBOCK, Texas – For most of the 2016 season, Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II has been celebrated for his 5,000-plus yards of total offense leading the high-octane Red Raider offense.
Â
On Thursday, however, Mahomes was recognized for his diligent work in the classroom as he was named a second team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Â
Mahomes is the first Red Raider to earn Academic All-America honors since Cody Davis in 2012. He joins his head coach Kliff Kingsbury as the only Red Raider quarterbacks in school history to receive the accolade after Kingsbury claimed the honor in 2002.
Â
Mahomes, who is the 10th Academic All-America selection in program history, was one of two Big 12 student-athletes named to one of CoSIDA's two All-America squads as he was joined by Oklahoma State offensive lineman Brad Lundblade.
Â
On the gridiron, Mahomes currently ranks as the nation's leader in both passing yards and total offense this season as he has recorded 5,052 yards through the air, making him the fourth Red Raider all-time to pass for over 5,000 yards in a season. He is the 12th quarterback in FBS history to reach the mark.
Â
In addition, Mahomes also became just the third FBS quarterback all-time to post 5,000 yards of total offense twice in a career. Mahomes, who has rushed for 285 yards and 12 touchdowns this year, joins Graham Harrell (2007-08) and Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011) in the elusive group.
Â
Mahomes threw for over 300 yards in nine of 12 games this season, including four contests where he totaled at least 500 passing yards. Mahomes set the NCAA FBS record on Oct. 22 with 819 yards of total offense against Oklahoma and matched the FBS record with 734 passing yards. Â
Â
Mahomes has also excelled in the classroom where he is currently pursuing his undergraduate degree in marketing. He was previously honored on the Academic All-Big 12 first team earlier this year.
Â
Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, Texas, was recognized along with fellow captain Justis Nelson in early November on CoSIDA's Academic All-District teams. The all-district honor made both Mahomes and Nelson eligible for Academic All-America consideration.Â
