Mahomes, Giles, Hatfield Earn All-Big 12 Honors

Clayton Hatfield was named to ESPN’s All-Big 12 second team on Tuesday afternoon
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Giles were both named second team All-Big 12 selections Tuesday by the Associated Press and ESPN.com.

This is the first postseason honor of Giles' career and the third for Mahomes, who was an honorable mention recipient by the conference coaches in 2015 and then the Big 12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year in 2014.

Mahomes orchestrated one of the nation's top offenses this season as he currently leads the country in passing yards (5,052) total offense (5,337) and total touchdowns (53). He is also the nation's leader in passing yards per game (421.0), points responsible for (318), points responsible for per game (26.5) and total offense per game (442.7).

Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, Texas, is only the third FBS quarterback in NCAA history to account for at least 5,000 yards of total offense in multiple seasons, joining the likes of former Red Raider signal caller Graham Harrell (2007-08) and another Kliff Kingsbury protégé in Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011). Mahomes is also just the fourth FBS quarterback to pass for at least 5,000 yards in just 12 or fewer games.

The successful junior campaign, which featured four games with 500 or more passing yards, has already earned Mahomes the Sammy Baugh Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top passer. He is the fourth Red Raider all-time to win the prestigious trophy.

Giles was among Mahomes' most popular targets this season after putting together one of the top sophomore campaigns in program history. Giles led the Red Raiders in receptions (69), receiving yards (1,158) and receiving touchdowns (13), all of which that ranked among the Big 12 leaders.

Giles currently ranks ninth nationally and second in the Big 12 with his 13 receiving touchdowns this year, which marked the most for a Red Raider since Darrin Moore recorded the same amount in 2012. That total ranks fourth all-time in the Tech single-season record book.

Giles, a native of Missouri City, Texas, also ended his year in ninth place all-time for single-season receiving yards as he surpassed the totals of both Jakeem Grant (2015) and Wes Welker (2003) in Tech's season finale against Baylor. His 1,158 receiving yards rank third historically among Tech sophomore receivers.

In addition to Mahomes and Giles, sophomore place kicker Clayton Hatfield was also recognized on ESPN's All-Big 12 second team. Hatfield, a native of Bourne, Texas, ranked second in the conference with 104 points and a 92.9 field-goal percentage, the latter of which was the highest in Tech single-season history. It marked the first career postseason honor for Hatfield.

The annual AP All-Big 12 team was selected by a 20-member media panel representing each of the conference's five states. The ESPN.com teams were chosen by its staff writers who regularly cover the league.
