Mahomes and Giles were recognized by the conference coaches Wednesday afternoon
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II and sophomore wide receiver Jonathan Giles earned an additional All-Big 12 honor Wednesday as the duo was named to the conference second team by the league coaches.
Â
The league's 10 head coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players. Mahomes and Giles previously received second-team accolades Tuesday afternoon in postseason awards conducted by both the Associated Press and ESPN.com.
Â
Mahomes put together one of the best seasons by a Red Raider quarterback in recent memory as he currently leads the country in passing yards (5,052), total offense (5,337) and total touchdowns (53). He is also the nation's leader in passing yards per game (421.0), points responsible for (318), points responsible for per game (26.5) and total offense per game (442.7).
Â
Mahomes, a native of Whitehouse, Texas, is only the third FBS quarterback in NCAA history to account for at least 5,000 yards of total offense in multiple seasons, joining the likes of former Red Raider signal caller Graham Harrell (2007-08) and Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011). Mahomes is also just the fourth FBS quarterback to pass for at least 5,000 yards in just 12 or fewer games.
Â
Mahomes threw for 500 or more passing yards in four games this season en route to eventually earning the Sammy Baugh Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top passer. He was also recognized as an Academic All-American following the regular season as well.
Â
Giles, meanwhile, was among Mahomes' most popular targets after hauling in team highs for receptions (69), receiving yards (1,158) and receiving touchdowns (13), all of which that ranked among the Big 12 leaders.
Â
Giles, a native of Missouri City, Texas, ended the regular season ranked ninth nationally and second in the Big 12 with 13 touchdown grabs, which marked the most for a Red Raider since Darrin Moore recorded the same total in 2012. That figure ranks fourth all-time in the Tech single-season record book.
Â
Giles also inked his name in the Tech record book for single-season receiving yards as he passed the totals of both Jakeem Grant (2015) and Wes Welker (2003) during Tech's regular-season finale against Baylor. His 1,158 receiving yards this season rank ninth all-time in Tech history and third among sophomore wideouts.
In addition to Mahomes and Giles, three other Red Raiders – Jordyn Brooks (linebacker, Defensive Freshman of the Year), Baylen Brown (offensive line) and Keke Coutee (wide receiver) – were all named honorable mention selections. Mahomes was also an honorable mention pick for Offensive Player of the Year.
