Mahomes is one of five finalists for the Earl Campbell Award which will be presented on Jan. 11
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was named a finalist Thursday morning for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which is presented annually to college football's top offensive player in the country with hometown, high school or junior-college ties to the state of Texas.
Â
Mahomes, who was previously one of 16 semifinalists for the award, will travel to Tyler, Texas, near his hometown of Whitehouse, for the awards banquet which will be held Jan. 11. He is the first Red Raider to be named a finalist for the award since Jace Amaro in 2013.
Â
Mahomes, already the winner of the Sammy Baugh Award (nation's top collegiate quarterback), is joined as a finalist by Texas running back D'Onta Foreman, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and wide receiver Dede Westbrook as well as Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Â
The junior has been among the most lethal quarterbacks in the country this season with 5,052 passing yards and 53 total touchdowns, both of which that lead the country. He is also the nation's leader in total offense (5,337), passing yards per game (421.0), points responsible for (318), points responsible for per game (26.5) and total offense per game (442.7).
Â
Mahomes is only the third FBS quarterback in NCAA history to post at least 5,000 yards of total offense in multiple seasons, joining the likes of former Red Raider signal caller Graham Harrell (2007-08) and Houston's Case Keenum (2008-09, 2011). He is the 12th quarterback to throw for over 5,000 yards in a season as well.
Â
Mahomes' damage was not just done through the air though as he also rushed for 12 touchdowns, the most for a Tech quarterback in school history. Mahomes is the only quarterback this season to throw for 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns and also rush for 200 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Â
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, which started in 2012 by the Tyler Chamber and SPORTyler, recognizes the top offensive player in Division I player who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals.
Â
