LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech men's tennis head coach Brett Masi has received a National Letter of Intent and Athletic Scholarship Agreement from Ronit Bisht announced Tuesday as part of the spring NCAA signing period.
"Ronit brings a great deal of experience and is a huge pickup for our program," Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. "Once again, Coach Wilson has done an excellent job of spotting and recruiting top notch talent for the Red Raiders. Ronit possesses many weapons and is the type of player which will keep Texas Tech moving in the right direction to contend for Big 12 titles and on the national level especially with the graduation of our top two players, Felipe Soares and Hugo Dojas."
Bisht, a 5-9 right-hander from New Delhi, India, will join the Red Raiders as a sophomore for the 2016-17 season. He currently holds a Universal Tennis Ranking of 14.13 which would be a team-high. Bisht has secured a current 658 ATP singles and 1,230 ATP doubles rankings by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). He has knocked off singles players ranked as high as 335 and 408 in the world.
Bisht attended Meerut College in Meerut, India. He appeared in two finals and two semifinals during International Tennis Federation (ITF) futures in India during the 2015 calendar year. Bisht has a future goal to become an ATP Top 100 player.
"Ronit is an ambitious player that is looking to take his game to the next level," Texas Tech assistant coach James Wilson said. "He comes to us with impressive results and extensive playing experience which will definitely help our team. I'm extremely confident that Ronit's attitude and skill set will enable him to make an immediate impact on our program."
The Red Raiders will wrap up the regular season with a pair of home matches and are slated to square off with their fourth and fifth consecutive Top 20 opponents in No. 18 Texas [Friday -- 6 p.m. CT] and No. 2 TCU [Sunday -- 1 p.m. CT].
Sunday's match will serve as Senior Day for Dojas, Soares and Evan Nix. Admission is free to the McLeod Tennis Center with free pizza while supplies last.
