Six Tennis Players Garner Academic All-Big 12 Accolades

IRVING, Texas -- The Texas Tech men's and women's tennis teams had three players apiece represent the programs on the Academic All-Big 12 teams announced Wednesday by the conference office.
Five of the six players were named to the first team which consists of student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA.
On the men's side, Jolan Cailleau and Alex Sendegeya picked up Academic All-Big 12 First-Team honors whereas Felipe Soares collected Academic All-Big 12 Second Team. It marks back-to-back seasons that Cailleau and Soares have been honored for their work in the classroom by the Big 12.
Sabrina Federici, Lynn Kiro and Gabriela Talaba represented the Lady Raiders with Academic All-Big 12 First-Team selections. Tech has had at least three players on the first team during three of the last four seasons, while Kiro earned her second academic nod.
To qualify for Academic All-Big 12, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Red Raiders (24-4, 2-1 Big 12) will face one of their most challenging weekends of the season but have the opportunity to claim a share of the Big 12 regular season championship with a pair of victories over No. 19 Texas (Friday -- 6 p.m. CT) and No. 4 TCU (Sunday -- 1 p.m.) at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Lady Raiders (19-4, 4-3 Big 12) conclude the regular season and a stretch of five straight road matches versus Iowa State (Friday -- 3 p.m. CT) and West Virginia (Sunday -- 9 a.m. CT).
Both Big 12 Tournaments will be hosted by Oklahoma State. The women run from April 28-May 1 followed by the men on April 29-May 1.
