Red Raiders Topple No. 1 Seed Florida, 3-2

Texas Tech earned the program's first win over a No. 1 ranked team since a 4-2 victory over Texas on May 27, 2010
OMAHA, Neb. -- Davis Martin saved possibly his best performance of the season for the biggest stage Tuesday afternoon as the freshman right-hander tossed seven shutout innings to lead Texas Tech to a 3-2 win over top-seeded Florida at TD Ameritrade Park.
The victory moves Tech (47-19) into another elimination game Thursday night where the Red Raiders will face Coastal Carolina, which fell to TCU later in the evening. The loss eliminates Florida from the College World Series.
Martin (10-1) was effective throughout the outing, limiting the Florida (52-16) offense to just three hits over his seven frames, which matched his longest outing of the season. It marked the second time during the NCAA Championship where Martin tossed seven innings after a similar performance in the NCAA Lubbock Regional opener versus Fairfield.
The win marked Martin's 10th of the season, the most for a Red Raider since Steve Rowe also recorded 10 during the 2002 season. His 10 wins are tied for the most nationally among freshmen pitchers.
Martin took advantage of a stellar day defensively by the Red Raiders as Tanner Gardner saved a run with a leaping catch in the left centerfield gap that sent him into the wall to end the first inning. Orlando Garcia also provided a diving snag to end the third.
The Red Raiders turned three double plays in the third, fifth and sixth innings to push Tech's season total to 81 which surpassed Georgia Tech for the most in the nation. Martin picked up his biggest two outs of the game in the sixth when he escaped a bases-loaded jam courtesy of a 1-2-3 double play and an interference call on Florida's JJ Schwarz who was hit with the ball out of the base line.
Hayden Howard came on to toss the final two innings for his team-leading ninth save of the season. He worked around a Peter Alonso two-run home run in the ninth inning. The nine saves vaulted Howard into sole possession of third place in Tech single-season high and into a sixth-place tie with John Neely on the career saves list.
The Red Raiders took an important 2-0 lead in the fourth inning thanks to a two-run blast from Eric Gutierrez. It was Gutierrez' team-leading 13th home run of the season as he easily cleared the fence in left field on a 0-1 pitch from Florida starter Alex Faedo.
Gutierrez finished 2-for-4 at the plate to lead a Red Raider offense that totaled eight hits, seven of which that came against Faedo. Cory Raley also added a 2-for-4 day with a pair of infield singles.
The Red Raiders tacked on an all-important insurance run in the top of the ninth. Tyler Neslony reached on a fielder's choice and hustled his way to the plate after a pair of throwing errors by Florida third baseman Jonathan India and Alonso from first base attempting to gun down Neslony at third.
Following the Alonso homer to make it 3-2, Neslony gunned down India for the game's final out. India was attempting to stretch a single into a double, but Neslony fired a bullet to second baseman Michael Davis for his third assist on the season.
Faedo (13-3) suffered the loss for the Gators after allowing two runs off seven hits while striking out nine Red Raiders over 7.2 innings. He was relieved by Scott Moss, who recorded the final out in the eighth, and then Dane Dunning, who surrendered an unearned run in the ninth.
Thursday's first pitch against Coastal Carolina is set for 7 p.m. CT and will be televised by ESPN2.
