Kaylee Hinton finishes 10th in the heptathlon at the USATF Junior Championships, but qualifies for Worlds because of previously held standard.
CLOVIS, Ca. -- Texas Tech track & field wrapped up the 2016 USATF Junior National Championships on Sunday, June 26, with a third qualifier to the IAAF World U20 Championships thanks to Kaylee Hinton in the heptathlon.
Although she finished 10th in the event, she was the only other competitor in the field who previously held the standard or achieved it at the meet other than the winner, giving her the Team USA berth.By punching her ticket, she ensured three current Red Raiders would advance to the World Championships.

Hinton came into the day in second with 3,207 points, trailing the leader by just 24 points. She added 750 points to her score after leaping to a distance of 5.67m/18-7.25 in the long jump, the third-best mark overall in the field. It gave her a five-event total of 3,957 points, dropping her down to third in the standings but moving her closer to the lead, behind by only four points heading into the javelin.
Unfortunately, Hinton fouled on all three of her attempts of the javelin, taking her out of the running for a top spot and dropped her down to eighth in the event. In the 800 meters, she clocked in with a time of 2:32.12 to earn 667 points, finishing with an overall score of 4,624 points.
