Texas Tech takes 2-1 lead, but ultimately falls in five sets

PORTLAND, Ore. – Texas Tech volleyball took an early 2-1 lead but ultimately fell to Colorado, 3-2, in the 2016 season opener on Friday, in Portland, Oregon.

Behind five early kills from Alyssa Ybanez, the Red Raiders took set one, 25-20, hitting .464 in the process. However, Colorado would strike back in set two with a 25-19 victory.

In set three, the teams exchanged sideouts for a good portion of the frame before Colorado went on a 5-0 run late in the set and held a 23-20 lead. Tech would battle back, though, tying the set at 23 before ultimately taking the set, 26-24, with a 6-1 spurt.

From there, Colorado would bounce back to take the fourth, 25-18.

In the fifth, the teams battled back and forth to a 9-8 Colorado lead. From there, the Buffaloes caught fire and rattled off the final six points of the match to win, 15-8.

Four Red Raiders finished with at least 12 kills and Hannah Henriksen nearly made it five Tech players in double figures, finishing with nine kills. Leading the way for Tech was Ybanez, with 13 kills. Lauren Douglass, Sarah Redding and Katy Keenan each had 12 kills.

It marked the first time four Red Raiders registered double-digit kills since Nov. 19, 2014, at TCU.

Marguerite Grubb dished out 52 assists to go along with seven digs, and Reyn Akiu had 24 digs as well as five helpers.

Tech out-hit Colorado for the majority of the match, but a .000 hitting percentage in set five dropped the Red Raiders to .252 for the match, compared to Colorado, which registered a .400 fifth-set hitting percentage for a five-set average of .326.

Tech had 51 digs compared to Colorado's 42, but the Buffaloes out-killed the Red Raiders 66-63, and had 12 blocks compared to Tech's nine.

The Red Raiders return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader, facing Long Beach State at 1:30 p.m. CT, and taking on tournament host Portland State at 9:30 p.m. CT.
