Keter Claims Big 12 Runner Of The Week Award
September 13, 2016 | Cross Country
Senior Benard Keter received the weekly honor from the conference office after his performance at the Texas Tech Open.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech cross country's Benard Keter was named Big 12 Men's Runner of the Week, the league announced today, after his performance at the Texas Tech Open on Sept. 8.
Â
The recognition marks back-to-back years a Red Raider has earned the honor and is the first for Keter, who is in his first season running for the Texas Tech cross country program.
Â
"This is a nice honor for running a good race at our home opener," head coach Jon Murray said. "It is always nice when Benard's work is recognized."
Â
Running on the same course as they will for the Big 12 Championships at the end of October, the men's team posted a first-place finish at the Texas Tech Open and were led by Keter. By the first mile of the men's 8K, Keter had taken over the top spot and would carry it through to the finish line, crossing the tape with a time of 26:24.90.
Â
The race victory was the second straight for the Nakuru, Kenya, native, who also won the opening week dual with New Mexico State on Sept. 2. At that meet, he paced to a time of 20:46.70 in the men's 6,195-meter race.
Â
Up next for Keter and the Texas Tech cross country teams is the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 1 in Fayetteville, which will feature some of the best competition in the country.
