
Texas Tech Drops Two in Final Day of Roadrunners Roundup

The Red Raiders open their Big 12 slate next Wednesday at TCU.
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Tech volleyball team dropped its final two matches at the Roadrunners Roundup, falling 3-0 to Wichita State and again 3-0 to host UTSA at the Convocation Center Friday.

The Red Raiders (10-5) concluded its road trip 1-4 after a 3-2 victory at Rice Wednesday and a loss at the hands of Texas State in their first match at the Roadrunners Roundup Thursday.

In the morning tilt against Wichita State (7-3), Texas Tech was outhit .271 to .163 and three Shockers tallied double-digit kills as Tech was dealt its second straight loss after rattling off 10 wins in a row, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20. The Red Raiders were unable to bounce back in the afternoon session as UTSA claimed a 25-12, 25-22, 25-12 win.Â

Freshman Chandler Atwood led Texas Tech against Wichita State with 10 kills, while junior Alyssa Ybanez added eight kills and five digs. Three Red Raiders posted double-digit digs as sophomore Reyn Akiu finished with 22, sophomore Katelyn Bryant tallied 16 and freshman Maggie Sagers closed with 10 in her second start in the scarlet and black.

The first set was up in the air with 12 ties before Wichita State went on a 6-2 run to take the set 25-21. The Red Raiders trailed just 20-19 in the second set despite hitting .140 in the frame, but the Shockers closed to win 25.22. Freshman Toni McDougald tallied two of her three kills in the third set to pull Texas Tech to within 20-18, but the Shockers again closed strong to earn a 25-20 win and take the match.

In the afternoon match, Atwood and senior Lauren Douglass led the team with five kills each. Sophomore Kyndal Cowan posted 17 assists, while Akiu chipped in 13 digs against UTSA (8-3).

Texas Tech trailed 8-4 in the opening set when senior setter Marguerite Grubb exited the match with an ankle injury. The Red Raiders cut the lead in half at 8-6, but UTSA went on a 9-2 run to take the set, 25-12. The Red Raiders held a 22-21 lead in the second set, but were unable to hold on as the Roadrunners scored the set's final four points to take the 25-22 victory. Texas Tech was unable to keep pace with UTSA in the third, falling 25-12.

Texas Tech begins Big 12 play Wed., Sept. 21, when it travels to Fort Worth for a 7 p.m. tilt at TCU in the University Recreation Center.
