Lady Raiders have an outstanding showing in first weekend of play
MIDLAND, Texas – Junior Sabrina Federici stayed undefeated en route to the 2016 Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational title to wrap up the first weekend of fall play. She became the first Lady Raider to win the championship at this tournament.
Â
"We are very excited for Sabrina. She has worked very hard on elevating her game during the offseason," Head Coach Todd Petty said. "She and Coach (Ric) Mortera worked together very well this weekend. It was a tough weekend because of the amount of matches, but we are proud of all of the girls."
Â
After dropping the first set 4-6, Federici battled back to take the match (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) over UTEP's Vivienne Kulicke to advance to the tournament final match.
Â
Federici had another exciting match in the final against Angeles de los Rios of UT-Arlington. But the sophomore continued to fight and took a 6-4, 7-6 win.
Â
Junior Katelyn Jackson dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to de los Rios in the second semifinal match.
Â
In doubles action, Federici and Alba Cortina-Pou were knocked out of play in the quarterfinals after an 8-4 loss to Walker and Williams of ACU.
Â
Jackson and Lynn Kiro were also edged out in a 8-3 defeat by UNT's Kononova and Kutubidze.
