September 28, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Red Raiders look to rebound at home Wednesday, Oct. 5, against Kansas State.
WACO, Texas – Baylor junior and reigning Sports Imports/American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Week Katie Staiger recorded a double-double with a match-high 19 kills and 10 digs as Baylor claimed a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 26-24, 25-19) of Texas Tech Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center.
Â
The Red Raiders (10-8, 0-3) dropped their sixth straight match and are now winless in their first three conference bouts for the first time since 2013. Baylor (14-4, 2-0), meanwhile, becomes the fourth Big 12 team this season to win 10 straight matches, joining Texas Tech, Kansas and Kansas State.
Â
"It was a much better effort than we saw on Saturday," head coach Tony Graystone said. "It's good to see those young players that we keep running out there start to figure some things out. We just have to keep doing it every night. We had chances in the second set, and these are the things we have to work on closing out. We just have to keep working, getting better and find a way to finish those out."
Â
The Red Raiders let a major opportunity slip away in the second set, as Texas Tech built a 24-22 lead and appeared to win the set when a Tech block was called in on the Baylor side of the court. The call, however, was reversed, and Baylor went won the next three points to steal the set, 26-24, and claim a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Behind the swing of Staiger, the Bears outhit the Red Raiders .259 and utilized a steady defensive effort to hold Tech to a .130 clip. Baylor tallied 50 digs, led by junior Jana Brusek's 20 and Staiger's 10, to the Red Raiders' 38.
Â
Senior Lauren Douglass led the Red Raiders in kills for the 12th time in 18 contests this season with seven. She added a team-high four blocks while senior Marguerite Grubb chipped in three stops of her own along with a team-high 27 assists. Â Sophomore Reyn Akiu posted 10 digs to lead the defense, and Ashley Morgan and Eighmy Dobbins tallied five apiece.
The Red Raiders have started four or more underclassmen in six of their last eight matches, including Wednesday night as Mcdougald and fellow freshmen Maggie Sagers and Chandler Atwood got nods along with Akiu and fellow sophomore Katy Keenan.
Texas Tech trailed just 14-12 in the first set after one freshman Toni McDougald's four kills in the match. Baylor, however, went on a 10-1 run to take command of the set and sink the Red Raiders. Junior Alyssa Ybanez tried to keep the Red Raiders afloat in the third set with all four of her kills coming in the final frame, but Baylor hit .326 on its way to claiming the third set and the victory.Â
Â
The Red Raiders look to rebound next week as they host Kansas State Wednesday, Oct. 5, at United Supermarkets Arena at 6 p.m. The match marks the first home match this season to be televised live (FCS Pacific, FSSW+).
