The Red Raiders fell in the 92nd minute for first home loss of 2017

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, coming in a 1-0 defeat to TCU in overtime at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

The Red Raiders (8-4-1, 1-2-1) moved to 4-1-1 in Lubbock with the result to the Horned Frogs (9-4-0, 3-1-0). It was also the first time Tech had lost back-to-back matches in 2017.

"We have to own today's goal," head coach Tom Stone said. "It's a painful lesson for this young team to learn. The race for points is on and we didn't get any this weekend. So, there's no alternative there. We have to go forward and move on."

Sunday's match was the third-straight contest that needed overtime to resolve, and fourth overall this season. It was the first stretch of three or more consecutive OT matches for Tech since 2015 when the Red Raiders had four in-a-row from Sept. 20-Oct. 2.

Tech posted nine shots, with six coming in the second half. Four of the six in the second frame were on net, finishing the day five shot on goal. Freshman forward Ally Griffin recorded three shots, all on net, for a third of Tech's overall output. The Red Raiders were held without a corner kick in the first half, but registered six in the second frame.

TCU was in the same boat in opposite periods, earning eight corners in the first half and none in the rest of the contest. However, the Horned Frogs racked up 18 shots, 10 in the first frame, with two more coming in overtime.

The two sides kept each other off the board through regulation, as Tech had its best chances late in the second half. A shot from the top of the box by Griffin at the 60-minute mark was met with a diving stop from TCU's keeper Katie Lund, setting up the first of two Tech corner kicks. The second found sophomore forward Jade King near the left post, but her header traveled left of the goal.

Later, a free kick from sophomore Mary Heiberger after a TCU yellow card found junior midfielder Carly Wickenheiser inside the six-yard box, but her header went just right of the post in the 74^th minute. With less than two minutes to spare in regulation, Griffin fired off another attempt from the right side, but her shot was brought in by Lund to send the match to overtime.

Shortly into the new period, TCU tallied the golden goal to secure the victory. Midfielder Yazmeen Ryan controlled the ball down the right wing and fired a cross to midfielder Kayla Hill on the left post, who sent it into the net for the score.

"We just have to build on what we've been doing the whole year," Stone said. "We know we are a good team, but we've just taken two tough losses this weekend."

The Red Raiders will return to action with only one match this upcoming weekend at Baylor on Friday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. in Waco.
