Tech Drops 3-0 Decision At Baylor

The Red Raiders falls in Friday tilt with Bears
WACO, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team wrapped its one-match weekend with a 3-0 defeat at Baylor on Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field.

The Red Raiders (8-5-1, 1-3-1) were unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit at halftime by the Bears (8-3-2, 2-2-1). Baylor picked up goals in the 17th & 31st minutes of the first half, followed by a 52nd minute tally to pick up the victory.

Tech finished the night with seven shots, including five in the second frame. Three of the Red Raiders' five shots in the second half were on goal, as freshman forward Ally Griffin led the team with two on net. Baylor recorded 11 shots, while both teams matched outputs in corner kicks (three) and fouls (11).

The Bears struck first in Friday's matchup, scoring on the first shot of the game in the 17th minute. After eight fouls committed by both squads, a pass from about 30 yards out from defender Sarah King found the head of forward Camryn Wendlant, who sent a high header into the goal for the 1-0 lead.

It was the sixth time this season an opponent had scored first against the Red Raiders.

Baylor would take a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute after its first corner kick of the night. Defender Caitlin Schwartz sent a soft tap to midfielder Aline De Lima, who quickly sent the ball back to a charging Schwartz down the goal line. Once with the ball, Schwartz lifted a serve to the center of the box and found defender Preci Akanyirige on a header for the score.

Tech recorded two shots in the opening frame, with one on goal coming from sophomore midfielder Jordie Harr from the left wing. Baylor was held to just four shots, while both teams racked up eight fouls through the first 45 minutes of play.

At the 53' mark, Baylor earned a penalty kick after a foul in the box on a breakaway prevented a shot for the Bears. Midfielder Aline De Lima's PK attempt hit off the crossbar and bounced to the left of the net, where midfielder Julie James scored on a high floater for the 3-0 advantage.

The Red Raiders return home to take on No. 25 Oklahoma State on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
