The Red Raiders outshot the Cowgirls, but drop Friday’s contest in Lubbock
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team dropped a hard-fought match against No. 25 Oklahoma State, 1-0, on Friday night at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Â
The Red Raiders (8-6-1, 1-4-1) held a 13-9 advantage in shots over the Cowgirls (12-2-2, 5-1-0), but were unable to overcome a goal in the 69th minute by OSU's Marlo Zoller.
Â
"It looks a lot like some of our recent matches," head coach Tom Stone. "We played well, created a bunch of chances, their keeper made a spectacular save and we literally had a pair of chances that were so easy to score that it's ridiculous we didn't score. I couldn't believe they didn't go in, but the shots were poor.
Â
"Then, when it looks like they're never going to score, we serve them up a counter-attack on a silver platter. We literally hand their best counter-attacking dribbler the ball and she goes down the field and scores and punishes us for our mistake. So, credit her and them for doing that. But it's a disappointing result when we play like we did."
Â
Oklahoma State posted six shots in the first half, with Tech tallying five in the opening frame, despite a majority of time spent with Tech in the attacking zone. The Red Raiders also earned four corner kicks, while freshman keeper Marissa Zuchetto racked up three saves.
Â
It was the first contest Zucchetto started this season, who played all 90 minutes of Friday's match.
Â
However, in the 69th minute, Camy Huddleston picked off a pass and sent one to Zoller, who charged down the right wing and fired a shot inside the left post for the go-ahead goal for her third score of the year.
Â
Despite eight shots, three on net, in the second half, the Red Raiders couldn't convert and was unable to score in the final 20 minutes to fall in a 1-0 decision.
Â
Tech has three matches left in the regular season, with two coming next weekend on the road on a short week, beginning with No. 7 West Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m. on ESPNU, followed by Iowa State on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m.
