Lauren Mason fired a 1-under-par 71 Sunday to lead No. 25 Texas Tech over the first round
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior Lauren Mason put together a solid opening round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational Sunday as she recorded a 1-under-par 71 at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio.
Â
Mason strung together three birdies over the opening round, the final of which came on her second-to-last hole at the par-3 17th. Mason enters Monday's second round in a tie for seventh place on the individual leaderboard.
Â
With Tech missing both Gabby Barker and Sofia Garcia, Tech rounded out the first round in 14th place, a stroke back of Middle Tennessee and three back of Texas State. The Red Raiders, ranked 25th nationally in the Golfweek poll coming into this week, carded a 23-over 311 as a team.
Â
Emma Ballard had Tech's next-lowest score behind Mason as she was 6-over to sit in a tie for 51st overall. Mami Yamamoto was two strokes back of her in a tie for 63rd while Louisa Brunt was 10-over and in a tie for 69th individually.
Â
Top-ranked Arkansas took control of the first-day lead behind a steady 7-under card. The Razorbacks have a nine-stroke advantage over TCU in second place and then 10 swings ahead of Kansas State in third.
Â
Tech will be paired with Middle Tennessee and a slew of unattached players during Tuesday's second round which is slated to begin with Brunt teeing off at 9:10 a.m. from the 10th hole. Live scoring will be available throughout the round at www.BirdieFire.com.
