LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech soccer's Ally Griffin has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, it was announced today.
It is the first conference honor of the year for the Southlake native.
Griffin, the first year forward, scored her team-high sixth goal of the year in Friday's regular season finale against Oklahoma last weekend. In the 39th minute of the first half, junior midfielder Carly Wickenheiser sent a perfect pass up through the Sooner defense to Griffin, who charged the net one-on-one and buried her shot in the back of the net.
It was Griffin's first goal since the Big 12 opener against Kansas State on Sept. 22 and her fifth game-winning score of the year. She finished Friday's match with three shots, two on net.
Griffin has started all 18 matches this season in the forward slot. She's racked up six goals and one assist for 13 points, including a multi-score day on the road against Arizona State on Sept. 8. Five of her six goals have been game-winners, with two coming in Big 12 play.
She leads the Red Raiders in nearly every offensive category: goals (six), points (13), shots (56), shots on goal (26) and game-winning goals (five). Tech has not lost this season when Griffin finds the back of the net.
Griffin and the Red Raiders return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m. against West Virginia in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City.
