Tech Garners 15 Academic All-Big 12 Honorees

The Red Raiders played 13 on the first team, with six earning nominated with distinguished marks
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech soccer team placed 15 student-athletes on the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 teams, the conference office announced today.

Tech's 15 members on this year's squad is tied for the second-most in the league, with 13 earning first team accolades. Last year, the Red Raiders led the conference with 14 total selections.

Six of Tech's 13 first team honorees were nominated with distinguished marks in: Brooke Denesik, Haleigh Fancher, Hannah Fernandez, Savanna Jones, Gabbie Puente and Carly Wickenheiser.

Other first team winners include: Cassie Boren, Cassie Conarty, Mary Heiberger, Demi Koulizakis, Gwennie Puente and Natalie Schmutz. Tech also earned second team honors from Jordan Duke and Jade King.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Red Raiders return to action in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m. against West Virginia at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City.
