12 Red Raiders Named Academic All-Big 12

Two out of the 12 honorees claim First Team All-Big 12 respects with a 4.00 GPA.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Cross Country named 12 student-athletes to the Academic All-Big 12 list, as announced by the conference this afternoon.
Bret Leigh Nance and Hattie Schunk were the only two Red Raiders to have a 4.00 GPA. This marks the third-consecutive cross country season where Schunk has received such honors and fourth time overall as a student-athlete. Nance is a first-time 4.00 first team Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

Following Nance and Schunk on the women's side with first team achievements was Kaylee Amershek, Denae Chapman and Lauren Younger.

For the men, Nathan Gift, Riley Gonzales, Todd Mickey, Ebenether Wondaferew and Shea Whatley were the five student-athletes who claimed first team All-Big 12 titles. Stephen Alvarez and Joacim Zuniga were named to the second team.

This is the fifth time that Mickey and Wondaferew have received All-Big 12 honors.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Red Raiders will compete tomorrow at the NCAA Mountain Regionals in Logan, Utah, starting with the women's 6k at 11:15 a.m. CST followed by the men's 10k at 12:15 p.m. CST.
