Texas Tech Surges Into Top 5 Of Golfstat Rankings
February 08, 2017 | Men's Golf
No. 5 Red Raiders have four individuals in the Golfstat top 75
LUBBOCK, Texas -- After a red-letter weekend for Texas Tech men's golf, the Red Raiders were able to jump from No. 18 to No. 5 on Wednesday in the Golfstat team rankings.
Â
This is the highest Tech has been ranked in either the Golfstat or Golfweek rankings since October 2014, when the Red Raiders rose to No. 4 in Golfstat, the highest ranking in school history.
Â
Tech holds the highest ranking of four Big 12 teams in the top 15. The Red Raiders are joined by No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 13 Baylor.
Â
Tech has also made a name for itself in the individual rankings with four of its players making it into the top 75. Amer Ari Invitational individual champion Fredrik Nilehn stands at No. 16, followed by No. 36 Hannes Ronneblad, No. 48 Ivan Ramirez and No. 73 Federico Zucchetti.
Â
The Red Raiders blitzed a field absolutely loaded with top-flight teams at the Amer Ari Invitational this weekend, winning by eight shots at a final tally of 44-under par. Tech outpaced three teams ranked in this week's top 15 by more than 20 strokes in Hawaii.
Â
Tech was led by Fredrik Nilehn, who finished birdie-eagle to force a three-man playoff at 16-under par, which he won with a birdie on the first hole. Nilehn's 54-hole score of 200 was a school record. Nilehn was joined in the top 10 by Federico Zucchetti, who finished 11-under to tie for fifth. Nilehn, in just four tournaments, has become only the ninth Red Raider all time to capture multiple tournament titles, after winning the Carmel Cup in September.
Â
The No. 5 Red Raiders will head to Palm Springs, Calif., next weekend to participate in the Desert Intercollegiate (Feb. 17-19) and the Prestige (Feb. 20-22). To keep up with the latest updates, follow @TTUMensGolf on Twitter and like Texas Tech Men's Golf on Facebook.
