The Red Raiders picked up their third-straight win over a top-10 team with Tuesday’s victory
It was the third-straight victory over a top-10 team for the Red Raiders (12-2), making it the first time since 2014 to accomplish the feat when Tech defeated No. 3 Indiana, No. 10 Rice and No. 3 Miami. Last weekend at the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, Tech took down No. 8 Ole Miss on Saturday, 5-1, and No. 2 LSU on Sunday, 5-2.
Coming into today's game, Arizona (11-2) was also ranked No. 1 in the first NCAA RPI poll of the season.
Tuesday's matchup was the first pitting top-10 teams together in Lubbock since 1997, when the No. 9 Red Raiders took two of three from No. 10 Oklahoma State. The last time Tech defeated a top-five opponent at Rip Griffin Park before the Tuesday win was on April 3, 2015, when the Red Raiders defeated No. 2 TCU, 5-1.
It was the first night game of the year for the Red Raiders, playing under the lights at Rip Griffin Park on "Turn Back The Clock" night, as Tech rolled out throwback cream-colored uniforms with red caps. The Red Raiders racked up 14 hits from nine different players, with four tallying multi-hit performances.
Freshman catcher Michael Berglund went 3-for-4, with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk. It was the first multi-hit game for the Corpus Christi native. Junior outfielder Tanner Gardner and sophomore designated hitter Cameron Warren each posted two hits, which also added Warren to the multi-hit column for the first time as a Red Raider. Warren tallied three RBI and one run scored to go along with his two hits against the Wildcats.
Senior infielder Hunter Hargrove also had two hits, while scoring three runs, extending his hitting streak to 14 games and his team-leading hit total to 22 this season. It was his team-high fifth multi-hit game of the year.
John Henry Gonzalez, the freshman righty, picked up his third start of 2017 on Tuesday, going 3.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out four. The one and only run given up came in the first inning, as a grounder by Alfonso Rivas scored Mitchell Morimoto, who walked earlier in the frame and advanced on a stolen base and throwing error.
It was the second time in three starts Gonzalez has only surrendered one run, sandwiching a two-run performance against New Mexico a week ago. Junior lefty Jacob Patterson recorded the win, his third of the season, after going 1.1 IP in relief, striking out one and allowing just one hit, as the Texas Tech pitching staff followed with eight scoreless innings.
The Red Raiders opened their five-inning scoring stretch with a two-run bottom of the second, as Gardner led off the frame with a single to center field. An Orlando Garcia walk put two on with no out, but a double play shortly after left Gardner on third with two away. Enter junior outfielder Connor Beck, who showed his speed by beating out an infield single to second, sliding head first to ensure Gardner's run would count to tie the game at one. After stealing second base, Beck would be driven in by Berglund, who slapped a go-ahead single through the right side of the infield for the 2-1 lead.
The third inning was the only frame of Tech's five scoring innings that featured only one run, coming off a Garcia single that scored Hargrove from second. The frame was set up after an intentional walk to Gardner, giving Arizona a force out opportunity that Garcia turned into riches for the Red Raiders.
Both of the next two frames were two-run innings, with Tech's runs in the fourth coming with two outs. Berglund poked a single up the middle of the field, followed by a double from Warren that sliced down the left field line to scored Berglund from first. Junior infielder Michael Davis continued the inning with a single through the left side of the field to push Warren across the plate for a 5-1 lead.
Tech would score a total of eight runs with two outs in the inning against the Wildcats on Tuesday night.
In the fifth, Hargrove and Gardner began the frame with back-to-back hits, a single and double, respectively, to put two in scoring position. Freshman outfielder Grant Little checked in for this situation, and promptly laced a single into center field to add another run and put Tech runners on the corners. With two outs in the frame, Gardner scooted home on a wild pitch on the final segment of a walk, giving the Red Raiders a 7-1 advantage.
The floodgates were opened in the sixth inning, as the Red Raiders poured out six runs on just two hits. A hit-by-pitch on the first pitch of frame, followed by a four-pitch walk to freshman infielder Josh Jung set the tone for the inning. It was mirrored over the next two batters, as Hargrove was hit four pitches later, while Gardner walked on a full count to auto-advance one runner home and keep the frame with no outs. After a fly out, another walk to Garcia added another run to Tech's total.
A sacrifice fly on a ball hit deep to left field by Beck scored Hargrove and sent Gardner over to third. Another RBI single by Berglund brought Gardner home, eventually putting runners on second & third with two outs. The frame was capped by a bases-clearing double by Warren put the score where it would stand for the rest of the night at 13-1.
Tuesday's game was the longest of the season, clocking in at 3 hours and 50 minutes. It was also the fifth time this year Tech has scored double digit runs.
The Red Raiders continue their four-game home stand with a weekend series against UTSA on March 10-12 at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, beginning with Friday's 6:30 p.m. tilt against the Roadrunners.
