2016 All-Star A.J. Ramos collects first save of the season last week
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball placed five former standouts on MLB Opening Day rosters, as the 2017 season got underway last week.
Â
The five Red Raiders include: Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies), Daniel Coulombe (Oakland Athletics), Nathan Karns (Kansas City Royals), A.J. Ramos (Miami Marlins) and Josh Tomlin (Cleveland Indians).
Â
CHAD BETTIS – Colorado Rockies - RHP
Bettis begins the season on the 60-day disabled list after needing chemotherapy to treat cancer. On Nov. 29, Bettis underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and was deemed to be a success on Dec. 22, but in March it was determined he would need the chemotherapy to continue treatment. Last season, Bettis led the Rockies in innings pitched with 186.0, putting together a 14-8 record.
The outpouring of support from across the MLB for Bettis and his fight against Cancer has been tremendous.
Â
DANIEL COULOMBE – Oakland Athletics - LHP
Coulombe has made two appearances this season for the A's over the first week of the year. On April 5, he pitched two innings of scoreless relief against the Los Angeles Angels, giving up just three hits and striking out one. In his second outing against the Texas Rangers, Coulombe allowed two runs and a walk, while picking up another strikeout in an inning. The A's are 4-4 this season and are third in the A.L. West.
Â
NATHAN KARNS – Kansas City Royals - RHP
Karns has made two appearances this for the Royals, the first in relief and the second a start against the Houston Astros. After a four-run outpour against the Minnesota Twins in his first outing, Karns put together a quality start in Houston, going 5.2 innings of one-run baseball. The lone run came in the first inning off a home run from George Springer, as Karns countered with 4.2 frames of scoreless pitching, striking out three in the process. He left the game with the lead, but the Astros would earn a walk-off win in 12 innings, 5-4. The Royals are 2-5 this season and are fifth in the A.L. Central.
Karns rallied back after a slow start for a nice debut in his new royal blue threads.
A.J. RAMOS – Miami Marlins - RHP
Ramos has made three appearances out of the Marlins bullpen this year, each for an inning at a time. In back-to-back outings against the Nationals on April 5-6, Ramos picked up one strikeout while allowing one hit. The first appearance kept the game at a 6-4 mark in the eighth with Miami trailing, while the next night came with a 4-3 lead in the 10th, giving Ramos his first save of the year. He also pitched another shutout ninth inning against the Braves on April 11, striking out two to close the 8-4 victory. The Marlins are 4-3 this season and are third in the N.L. East.

JOSH TOMLIN – Cleveland Indians - RHP
Tomlin has only made one start this season, coming at the Diamondbacks on April 7. Tomlin went 4.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out six and issuing only one walk to move to 0-1 this season. His next scheduled start is slated for Thursday, April 13, at home against the White Sox. The Indians are 4-3 this year and are third in the A.L. Central.
