Texas Tech registers its 19th team tournament title under Sands
IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team captured its second team tournament title of the season on Sunday, winning the Hawkeye Invitational.
This marks the first season in which Tech has won multiple team tournament titles since the 2009-10 academic year. It's the 19th team tournament title under head coach Greg Sands.
The Red Raiders (-9) slammed the door at Finkbine Golf Course late on Sunday, after finishing the second round, which was suspended Saturday night. Tech was two shots behind Kansas to begin round three.
However, Kansas went 6-over on the final 18, and Tech went 2-under to finish off its 54-hole score of 855. The Red Raiders only needed to hold off host Iowa (-5) late, which took second, four shots off the pace.
Tech was even with Kansas midway through the back nine before going 4-under as a team on the 15th hole. That, plus some late Jayhawk struggles, allowed Tech to coast across the finish line.
"I'm proud of how we finished this tournament on those last few holes," Sands said. "It's one thing to be a favorite at a tournament, but it's another to actually play like it and win it. It's a great feeling to be able to start and finish the spring portion of the regular season with wins like this. We definitely have some things to clean up before next weekend, but I like where we are right now."
Hurly Long led the Red Raiders with a second-place finish, at 7-under. Federico Zucchetti (-1, T9th) and Ivan Ramirez (+1, T15) joined Long in the top 15. Rounding out the team scoring were Fredrik Nilehn (+2, T21) and Hannes Ronneblad (+4, T30).
"I was extremely happy with how Hurly played," Sands said. "He has been playing with a chip on his shoulder and has been really focused lately. He missed a few tournaments but he never complained—he just worked harder."
Sandy Scott went 5-under as an individual, and Hayden Springer tied for 11th at even par, also playing as an individual.
The Red Raiders, after bookending the spring portion of the regular season with tournament victories, will gear up for the Big 12 Championship, April 24-26, in Hutchinson, Kan.
