Tech Set For Big 12 Championship At Prairie Dunes
April 23, 2017 | Men's Golf
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The No. 11 Texas Tech men's golf team will tee off Monday morning in the 2017 Big 12 Championship, held April 24-26 at Prairie Dunes, in Hutchinson, Kan.
Tech enters the postseason having won its final tournament of the regular season, the Hawkeye Invitational, bookending the spring portion of the schedule with tournament titles, after winning the Amer Ari Invitational in February.
The Red Raiders played a practice round on Sunday and will tee off alongside Kansas at 8:22 a.m. on Monday. Tech enters this tournament having earned top-three finishes at the last three Big 12 Championships.
The Red Raiders are one of five Big 12 teams ranked in the nation's top 20, making for an incredibly tough field on an incredibly tough course in Prairie Dunes, which hosted the 2014 NCAA Championship. Prairie Dunes is a par-70, 6,940-yard course, featuring just two par 5's—holes 7 and 17.
"I think we're up for the challenge," Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. "We know if we can be in contention at the end, anything can happen. With four rounds, that's all you can hope for—be patient and give yourself a chance at the end. There are a lot of good golf teams here so it won't be easy, but if you take care of the things you can control, when you look up at the end, you'll probably be happy with the result."
Representing Texas Tech will be Hannes Ronneblad, Ivan Ramirez, Fredrik Nilehn, Federico Zucchetti and Hurly Long, who nailed down the No. 5 spot in the lineup by taking second overall (-7) at the Hawkeye Invite. All five Red Raiders enter the postseason averaging 72 or better per round this year.
The 72-hole championship will feature a 36-hole opener on Monday, as the teams will play both the first and second rounds to start things off, before playing the third round on Tuesday and closing things out on Wednesday.
