Twenty-three former Texas Tech standouts are playing professional baseball in 2017
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech baseball has six former standouts on major league squads in the second month of the 2017 season, with 17 more in different levels of the minor league system.

The six Red Raiders in MLB include: Chad Bettis (Colorado Rockies), Daniel Coulombe (Oakland Athletics), Nathan Karns (Kansas City Royals), A.J. Ramos (Miami Marlins), Josh Tomlin (Cleveland Indians) and Kelby Tomlinson (San Francisco Giants).

Seventeen additional Red Raider standouts have started the year in the minor leagues, sprinkled throughout the ranks from Class A to AAA, as well as Independent baseball.

CHAD BETTIS – Colorado Rockies - RHP
Bettis began the season on the 60-day disabled list after needing chemotherapy to treat cancer. On Nov. 29, Bettis underwent surgery to remove the cancerous cells and was deemed to be a success on Dec. 22, but in March it was determined he would need the chemotherapy to continue treatment. Last season, Bettis led the Rockies in innings pitched with 186.0, putting together a 14-8 record.

DANIEL COULOMBE – Oakland Athletics - LHP
Coulombe has made 12 appearances this season for the A's over the first five weeks of the year. He's tossed 12.0 innings, allowing just four runs on 13 hits, while striking out eight. So far in May, he's had three outings out of the bullpen, throwing a combined 3.2 IP and given up just one run against Detroit on May 6. On May 9, Coulombe struck out one in a scoreless frame of work against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The A's are 16-18 this season and are fourth in the A.L.

NATHAN KARNS – Kansas City Royals - RHP
Karns has made seven appearances this for the Royals, the first in relief and the last six in a starting role. He's picked up wins in each of his last two starts against the Chicago White Sox and on the road at Tampa Bay. Against the White Sox, Karns tossed 6.0 shutout innings, giving up just one hit & striking out seven. Five days later, he went 6.1 frames, giving up two runs on six hits, while ringing up a season-high 10 batters. Over 12.1 innings throw in May, Karns has put together a 1.46 ERA and a 0.81 WHIP. The Royals are 12-21 this year and are fifth in the A.L. Central.

A.J. RAMOS – Miami Marlins - RHP
Ramos has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen for the Marlins this year. Over 12.0 innings pitched, Ramos has given up five runs, four earned, & 10 hits, while striking out 14. Only allowed one hit over his first two outings in May, ringing up the side in that one-hit appearance against the Tampa Bay Rays. Ramos is 3-for-3 this season in save opportunities. This season, the Marlins are 13-20 and are fourth in the N.L. East.

JOSH TOMLIN – Cleveland Indians - RHP
Tomlin has made six starts this season for the Indians, posting a 2-3 record. He picked up his second win of the year against Seattle on April 30, tossing 5.0 inning, giving up four runs on eight hits while recording three strikeouts in the 12-4 victory. Tomlin followed it with his best outing of the year, going 7.0 frames of one-run ball, allowing three hits and striking out three against the Royals on May 6. This season, the Indians are 18-15, leading the A.L. Central by half-a-game.

KELBY TOMLINSON – San Francisco Giants - INF
Tomlinson was recalled to the Giants active roster on April 26. Over 10 games, Tomlinson's recorded five hits, scoring one run, putting together a .263 average at the plate. It is his third stint with the club in as many years. Before getting the call up, Tomlinson had played in 14 games this season for the Sacramento River Cats, racking up 13 hits along with four RBI and 11 runs scored. This season, the Giants are 12-23 and are fifth in the N.L. West.

BLAKE BASS (RHP) – Down East Wood Ducks – Carolina League - Class A Advanced – Texas Rangers
Bass has pitched in six games in 2017, picking up a win and a save for the Down East Wood Ducks. Over 11.0 innings, Bass has given up 15 hits and 10 runs, six earned, while striking out five. Last season, Bass was 6-3 with two saves in 36 appearances in Class A ball for the Hickory Crawdads. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on April 26.

DALTON BROWN (RHP) – Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – Midwest League – Class A – Milwaukee Brewers
Brown has made two appearances this season for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Over 3.2 innings, he's struck out two, while giving up six earned runs. Last season, Brown finished 1-1 with one save in 12 outings in Rookie League play with the Helena Brewers and the Arizona League Brewers.

SHANE BROYLES (RHP) – Hartford Yard Goats – Eastern League – Class AA – Colorado Rockies
Broyles has pitched in 10 games this year for the Hartford Yard Goats. He's finished three games, earning one save, racking up 19 strikeouts over 13.2 innings. He's allowed only three runs on three hits in his second year with the club for a 1.93 ERA. Broyles has given up just one hit in his last six outings, racking 15 strikeouts over 8.0 shutout frames of work. Last season, he appeared in 36 games, picking up one save and 69 strikeouts in Class AA play.

MATT CUSTRED (RHP) – Rome Braves – South Atlantic League – Class A – Atlanta Braves
Custred has made five appearances in 2017 for the Rome Braves. In 10.2 innings, he's allowed only one earned run and six hits, while ringing up 14 opposing hitters. He sits with a 0.84 ERA early into his second season in Rome at Class A ball. Last season, Custred made 40 appearances, posting a 5-3 record with two saves, striking out 64 over 56.2 innings pitched. He was placed on the seven-day disabled list on April 26.

TY DAMRON (LHP) – Beloit Snappers – Midwest League – Class A – Oakland Athletics
Damron has made four starts and seven total appearances for the Beloit Snappers this season. He picked up a save in his first non-start of the year on April 15, totaling 25.0 innings, giving up only eight earned runs. Damron has already struck out 30 hitters, while walking only six, well past his 2016 total of 15 strikeouts in Short A ball last year.

JONNY DROZD (LHP) – Fort Myers Miracle – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Minnesota Twins
Drozd has pitched in 11 games for the Fort Myers Miracle in 2017. He's closed out seven games this season, earning three saves, totaling 16.1 innings and a 1.65 ERA. Drozd has struck out 11 batters while giving up just three earned runs on 15 hits in his first year in Class A Advanced ball in the Minnesota system. He spent his first three years in the Yankees farm, spending parts of two seasons at the Class A Advanced level.

ROBERT DUGGER (RHP) – Clinton Lumberkings – Midwest League – Class A – Seattle Mariners
Dugger has made nine appearances for the Clinton Lumberkings this season, finishing off six games and earning two saves. In 17.1 innings pitched, he has struck out 14, while allowing seven runs on 13 hits. It is his second season in the Mariners system, spending last year in different spots in Short A ball, Rookie league and Class AAA.

ERIC GUTIERREZ (INF) – Greensboro Grasshoppers – South Atlantic League – Class A – Miami Marlins
Gutierrez began his 2017 season on April 29 and has gotten off to a hot start with the Greensboro Grasshoppers. In eight games this year, Gutierrez has 10 hits in 27 at-bats for a .370/.519/.991 line. Included in his 10 hits are four doubles, while also driving in four runs and scoring five. This year marks his first full year in the Marlins system, as he moved from Rookie League to Short A ball in 2016 after completing his collegiate career.

HAYDEN HOWARD (LHP) – Hagerstown Suns – South Atlantic League – Class A – Washington Nationals
Howard has appeared in seven games this year for the Hagerstown Suns. He's picked up one win, while pitching in 19.1 innings, allowing 14 runs on 25 hits. Howard has struck out 20 batters & walked seven in his first year in Class A ball. Last year, Howard spent time in Short A & Rookie League levels, pitching in 12 games over 23.1 innings.

COLT HYNES (LHP) – Tulsa Drillers – Texas League – Class AA – Los Angeles Dodgers
Hynes has pitched in seven games for the Tulsa Drillers this season, putting up a 2-1 mark after starting in four contests. Over 24.0 innings, he has allowed 11 runs on 28 hits, striking out 19 & issuing only four walks. Hynes returns to the Dodgers organization, spending time with Toronto, Oakland and Cleveland over the last two years, moving from AA-to-AAA-to-MLB.

RYAN MOSELEY (RHP) – Rancho Cucamonga Quakes – California League – Class A Advanced – Los Angeles Dodgers
On Feb. 19, Moseley was traded from the Baltimore Orioles organization to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he has been assigned back-and-forth to the Dodgers Extended Spring Training team to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes over the last month. In two games with the Quakes, Moseley has made one start, tossing 4.0 innings of shutout ball, giving up only two hits and striking out three. He's totaled 8.0 frames this season and five strikeouts with the Quakes. After wrapping up his college career in 2016, Moseley spent 12 games with the Aberdeen IronBirds in Short-Season A ball in the Orioles organization.

TYLER NESLONY (OF) – Florida Fire Frogs – Florida State League – Class A Advanced – Atlanta Braves
Neslony has played in 19 games this season for the Florida Fire Frogs. In 61 at-bats, he has 19 hits, including nine doubles and two homers, with nine RBI and 16 runs scored. He has a .311/.440/.557 line to start out his second season in the minors. Last year, he played in 46 games in Class A & Rookie League play, hitting a combined .280 with 46 hits.

REID REDMAN (RHP) – Northwest Arkansas Naturals – Texas League – Class AA – Kansas City Royals
Redman has pitched in 10 games this year for the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. In 15.2 innings, he's struck out 19 and issued only one walk, while giving up eight runs on 13 hits. Redman is in his third season with the Royals organization and put together a 2-2 record last season with a 2.84 ERA across the Rookie, Class A & AA leagues.

DUSTIN RICHARDSON (LHP) – Sugar Land Skeeters – Atlantic League – Independent League
Richardson has pitched in seven games for the Sugar Land Skeeters this season, finishing off one game to earn a save. In 6.2 innings pitched, he's struck out 10 & given up just three hits and one run for a 1.35 ERA. It is his second stint in the Independent League, playing for Long Island last season. He's been a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers & Angels organizations along with the Marlins & Braves, as well as playing in the majors for the Red Sox.

ZACH STEWART (RHP) – Norfolk Tides – International League – Class AAA – Baltimore Orioles
Stewart appeared in seven games this season for the Norfolk Tides, making three starts & finishing two games. In 17.0 innings pitched, he has rung up 13 opposing hitters, while giving up 14 earned runs. It is Stewart's first year with the Baltimore organization, after spending the last two seasons with the NC Dinos in Korea. Stewart was released from the Norfolk Tides on May 2.

COREY TAYLOR (RHP) – Binghamton Rumble Ponies – Eastern League – Class AA – New York Mets
Taylor his pitched in 11 games this year for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Over 12.1 innings, Taylor has struck out 11 batters and allowed only eight runs, while finishing off six contests for one save. It is the third year Taylor has been in the Mets system since 2015 and earned an invite to the program's spring training camp.

ANDRE WHEELER (LHP) – Winston-Salem Dash – Carolina League – Class A Advanced – Chicago White Sox
Wheeler has pitched in eight games this year with the Winston-Salem Dash. In his third stint in Class A Advanced ball, Wheeler has put together a 2.92 ERA over 12.1 innings, allowing four runs and striking out 14. Last season, he spent time with the Dash & moved up to AA ball in Birmingham, where he pitched in 19 games.

MATT WITHROW (RHP) – Mississippi Braves – Southern League – Class AA – Atlanta Braves
Withrow has made seven starts this season for the Mississippi Braves, posting a 1-1 overall record. In 35.1 innings pitched, he's allowed only 13 runs, 12 earned, on 22 hits, racking up 33 strikeouts for a 3.06 ERA. It is his third year in the Braves organization, moving from Danville in 2015 to Carolina last year.
