Track & Field Primed for Big 12 Championship

The Red Raiders are set to compete in Lawrence, Kansas, at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field is set for the Big 12 Track & Field Outdoor Championship this week at the Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kansas, On May 12-14.
Competition is set to begin on Friday with the start of the men's decathlon at 11 a.m. followed shortly by the women's heptathlon events at 11:30 a.m.
Live results will be available for the three-day meet as well as a live stream. Results will be provided by Delta Timing and the video stream by Flo Track.
HEADING INTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP
Heading into competition at Rock Chalk Park, Texas Tech track & field has seven marks that hold a first-place Big 12 ranking. Looking at the top-three, 18 marks are topping the conference rankings. Sitting in first-place is Werner Bouwer, Charles Brown, Steven Champlin, Trey Culver, C.J. Jones, Benard Keter, and Zarriea Willis. This weekend, Bouwer looks to improve his season opening javelin throw of 72.16m/236-9 made in San Antonio that scored him an all-time Texas Tech mark. A huge long jump leap of 8.25m/27-1 from Brown not only leads the conference, but also the nation. Champlin comes into the conference meet off of a lifetime-best 400-meter performance home-meet run where he clocked a 45.01 (45.12 with altitude) time. A Texas Relays high jump bar of 2.24m/7-4.25 allowed Culver his leading position, which also ranks third in the NCAA. Jones showed out in his Sun Angel Classic 800-meter run where he clocked a 1:46.70 race. The 3,000-meter steeplechase is headed by Keter, who paced a 8:43.05 race at the Mt. SAC Relays in California. Willis leads the charge for the women's high jump with her 1.82m/5-11.50 bar from the Red Raider Shootout two weeks ago.
GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES
The men's team matched the highest ranking in program history with their third-place spot in the past two weeks of USTFCCCA rankings. This No. 3 spot is the highest ranking held by the men's program since 2012. Drew McMichael hit a lifetime best for the second week in a row on Texas Tech turf as he cleared 5.5.32m/17-5.50. This height placed McMichael 24th in the nation and 13th on the Division I West Qualifying list. The week before at the Red Raider Shootout, Steven Champlin's and Kyle Collins' times of 45.01 and 45.06, officially entered as 45.12 and 45.17 after the altitude conversion, moved them to No. 4 and No. 5 on the national qualifying list in 400-meter dash.

Earlier this week, the Big 12 Conference honored 23 Texas Tech track & field student athletes on their first and second-team Academic All-Big 12 list. 16 garnered first-team recognition and 7 earned a spot on the second-team. A 4.00 GPA was achieved by Tayler Jameson, making her one of 18 athletes in the conference to receive recognition for their accomplishments. Those named to the first and second teams were: Kaylee Amershek, Hannah Bradley, Marika Brown, Jocelyn Caro, Trey Culver, Riley Gonzales, Jade Greer, Kaylee Hinton, Tayler Jameson, Joel Latson, Maggy Mulholland, Amani Nesmith, Adria Parker, Christopher Scott, Isaac Shepard, Hagen Stoute, Reece Timmons, Jasmine Torres, Ebenether Wondaferew, Blake Wood, Megan Wood and Lauren Younger.

Next up the Red Raiders will have a one week break before heading to the NCAA West Preliminaries in Austin, Texas, on May 25-27.
