Red Raiders Travel to UTSA for Midweek Doubleheader

Tech closes the regular-season with six non-conference games away from home.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball begins its final week of regular-season play with a midweek doubleheader at UTSA Wednesday, May 3, at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio.

First pitch of game one between the Red Raiders (17-29, 4-14 Big 12) and Roadrunners (19-32, 9-15 C-USA) is set for 2 p.m., while game two is scheduled to begin at approximately 4:15 p.m., or 30 minutes following the conclusion of game one. Live stats will be available at www.GoUTSA.com.

Texas Tech concluded Big 12 regular season play last week with three losses at the hands of No. 7 Oklahoma on senior weekend. The Red Raiders have an opportunity to improve upon their 13-15 non-conference record this week with six out of conference matchups on the docket. Tech is looking to end a nine-game losing streak Wednesday and pick up consecutive wins for the first time since March, when it swept Iowa State to begin Big 12 play.

The Red Raiders currently sits at fifth in the Big 12 Conference standings with one week of Big 12 play remaining before the Big 12 Championships May 12-13 in Oklahoma City, where the top six teams in the league battle it out for the title. Tech holds a one-game lead over Iowa State and Kansas, who face each other this weekend in Ames, Iowa.

UTSA comes in with a four-game losing streak, but is a solid 10-10 at home this season. The Roadrunners are 2-13 against common opponents, compared to 4-9 for the Red Raiders. Two Roadrunners have hit double-digit home runs this season in freshman Rylee Rodriguez (10) and sophomore Bailee Baldwin (10), while freshman Lindsey Stewart leads the team with a .406 batting average. UTSA's top two pitchers are junior Lizzy Fox (3.85 ERA) and senior Nicole Merrill (4.26 ERA).

Texas Tech and UTSA will square off for the 27th and 28th time in the history of the two teams Wednesday afternoon in San Antonio. Texas Tech holds a 15-9 advantage in the all-time series and has won nine of the last 10 meetings overall.

The Red Raiders were victorious against the Roadrunners in the last matchup between the two programs, defeating UTSA, 6-4, in the final game of the 2016 Texas Tech Invitational at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock.

Texas Tech is 7-3 against UTSA in games played in San Antonio and has won each of the last three meetings that took place in the Alamo City.

Wednesday marks the fifth and sixth times Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory will square off against UTSA. Gregory's squad dropped a neutral-site game in 2015, but has since rattled off three straight wins for a 3-1 overall mark against the Roadrunners.
