June 08, 2017 | Men's Tennis
The Red Raiders will meet Virginia, the three-time defending NCAA Champions, as part of ITA Kick-Off Weekend in January.
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Texas Tech men's tennis team will square off with Virginia, the three-time defending NCAA Champions, during 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend announced Thursday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Red Raiders will be joined by No. 25 Columbia and No. 27 Ole Miss at the four-team Charlottesville site which will be played indoors at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
Opening round matches are set for Saturday, January 27 followed by championship and consolation matches on Sunday, January 28. The winner of the Charlottesville site will be one of 16 teams to qualify for the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor Championships from February 16-19 hosted by the University of Washington.
Texas Tech has posted an 8-10 record on ITA Kick-Off Weekend since 2009 and qualified for the 2011 and 2016 ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The Red Raiders won two of their three matches during the 2016 event which was hosted by Virginia.
January's matchup marks the first meeting between Texas Tech and Virginia. The Red Raiders have secured a 1-1 record versus Ole Miss highlighted by a sweep of the Rebels at the 2016 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Austin, Texas. Texas Tech also knocked off Columbia in the only meeting between the two schools at the 2013 Blue Gray Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Red Raiders are slated to return four of six members of their singles lineup from last season sparked by Bjorn Thomson, Alex Sendegeya and Connor Curry who accounted for 43 of the team's 67 singles victories during dual match play between the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 positions.
