LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics is pleased to announce that 16 student-athletes will earn their degrees during the university's commencement ceremonies held Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena.
Each of the 16 student-athletes graduating this weekend will walk the stage wearing a special red stole that signifies the individual's status as a student-athlete. The red stoles are part of a new athletics tradition that debuted this past spring and will continue to be presented to graduating student-athletes prior to each ceremony.
"It's always an exciting time when you see your student-athletes earn their degrees," Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "We're proud of their accomplishments in the classroom, and I know their friends and family will enjoy watching them receive their diplomas this weekend."
Among the list of graduates are eight football student-athletes, five of which are currently participating in preseason practices. Dylan Cantrell, Talor Nunez, Kisean Allen, Cameron Batson and Zach Barnes will all earn their diplomas this weekend with a season of eligibility still remaining.
They will be joined by recently departed seniors Paul Banks III, Payton Hendrix and Baylen Brown during commencement exercises. Batson will receive his degree with honors after majoring in management through the Rawls College of Business.
The list of graduates also includes men's tennis standouts Hugo Dojas and Carlos DiLaura, track and field athletes Amani Nesmith, Michael Samuels and Kareem McBride as well as volleyball's Victoria Hinneburg. Chris Beard's men's basketball program will also have two graduates in Devon Thomas and Matthew Temple.
Texas Tech will hold ceremonies at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday to honor its 1,478 undergraduate and graduate students earning their degrees. Ceremonies will be streamed live at www.ttu.edu/livestream.
