Texas Tech cross country completes first meet of the season against New Mexico State.
RUIDOSO, N.M. – Texas Tech traveled to Ruidoso, New Mexico, to kick off the season in its duel against the New Mexico State Aggies this afternoon, with Ebenether Wondaferew leading the front for the Red Raiders.
Wondaferew took a No. 2 overall finish at a 21:27.70 pace in the men's 6,195m, marking his highest cross country career finish ever.
Not far behind in fourth place was senior Clark Blunt, who ran a lifetime-best 21:37.60 mark. This is an almost 20-second improvement from last year's competition at the Fitness Trail.
On the women's side, Denae Chapman led the women with her seventh-place 18:37.70 time in the 4,523m run.
"This is a much improved New Mexico State team from the last few years," Head Cross Country Coach Jon Murray said. "This meet shows us where we are today. It is part of our training so I am happy with the effort. We know what we need to do to get better and we will spend our time doing it. "
Next week, Tech is hosting a meet on Saturday, September 9 at the Chaparral Ridge Course starting with the men at 8 a.m.
