SATURDAY STORYLINES
- After dismantling Eastern Washington via a 56-10 rout to start the season, Texas Tech will be looking for a 2-0 start Saturday when the Red Raiders host Arizona State under the lights at Jones AT&T Stadium. Tech enters the matchup having scored 50 or more points in 11 of its last 13 home games.
- Arizona State spoiled a potential 2-0 start for the Red Raiders a year ago as the Sun Devils held off Texas Tech with a 68-55 shootout victory in Tempe. It marked the first time since 2004 the Red Raiders had not started a season with a 2-0 record.
- Nic Shimonek was nothing short of accurate in his first career start at quarterback. He completed his first 14 passes against Eastern Washington en route to finishing 26-of-30 overall for 386 yards and three touchdowns. Shimonek's 14-straight completed passes was one shy of the Tech single-game record.
- Shimonek took advantage of Tech's depth at wide receiver, finding Keke Coutee and Derrick Willies on passing touchdowns of over 60 yards. Tech was one of four FBS programs to throw two touchdown passes over 60 yards during the opening weekend of college football.
- David Gibbs' unit got off to a great start against Eastern Washington, holding the Eagles to just 301 yards of total offense and only 10 points. It marked the fewest points allowed by the Tech defense since early in the 2013 season.
- The Red Raiders forced three turnovers in the win, a key point of emphasis from Kliff Kingsbury in the offseason.
- Eastern Washington had averaged 46.3 points per game in its last three meetings against FBS foes such as Washington (2014), Oregon (2015) and Washington State (2016).
