Leite's Two Wins Highlight Day One at Midland Invite
September 15, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Matheus Leite advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals at the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational.
MIDLAND, Texas – Matheus Leite racked up a pair of hard-fought singles victories in his career debut and punched his ticket to the quarterfinal round of the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational on Friday.
Leite dismissed Utah State's Samuel Serrano with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph and outlasted Josh Sheehy of Abilene Christian by a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (6), 1-0 (6) score line to secure his spot in the final eight.
"Overall, Matheus was the highlight today with two great singles wins in his first day of college matches," Texas Tech assistant coach Daniel Whitehead said. "Justin played well in his first college match but wasn't able to get the win. Jackson didn't play his best today, and we need to get better at finding a way to win without our best tennis day. Our goal today was to compete at a high level and control our emotions, and we did that well. We have a lot of tennis coming tomorrow, and I expect all three of these guys to do well tomorrow."
